Becoming-Vegetal, Becoming-Inorganic, Becoming-You

Becoming is certainly not imitating, or identifying with something […] Becoming is a verb with a consistency all its own; it does not reduce to, or lead back to, “appearing,” “being,” “equaling,” or “producing.”
– Deleuze and Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus

In this talk, Shawn will discuss Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of ‘becomings’ as a generative force of engagement in the context of his works. He will focus in particular on three pieces– Entwined, in which he is bound with plant personhoods; Needing, in which he is kneaded with 50 pounds of flour; Corresponding with Differences, in which he corresponds in letters with a community that is ‘not yet here’. Shawn will investigate how becomings, which “lack a subject distinct from itself”, might suggest other ways to reconfigure the encounter in ‘relational’ art, and perhaps even alternative ways of conceiving communities.

THE ARTIST

“My works often linger uncertainly in the uncanny, engaging conceptual evocations of puppetry, and exploring the abominable loves of person-thing relations. I have since become increasingly suspicious of my own personhood as I become aware of the uncanny liveness of things.”

[Rest of bio redacted due to artist’s suspicion of his own personhood.]
